I am very excited and honored to come into your home to photograph your family and newborn baby. Here are some helpful tips and what to expect on the day of your session.
What to wear – For newborns I highly suggest just a neutral plain white onesie. I will provide headbands/bows and bow ties for you to borrow for your session. I will also do a lot of swaddling in different cotton and stretch wraps. I typically do not photograph your newborn in his/her “birthday” suit unless you request it. For mom, I highly suggest neutral tones and soft colors or light patterns. A maxi dress or comfy cotton knit stretch dress is comfortable and classy. For dad, I suggest a neutral colored tee shirt and either jeans or khakis. For siblings I suggest also the neutral tones or soft solid patterned tops, jeans or khakis or cotton sundresses for girls. Bare feet are most cozy and appropriate for in-home sessions.
Try to keep baby awake a few hours before your session, by playing with them, giving them a bath, talking to them. Try your best to keep baby awake so that he/she will sleep soundly during your session. Feed, burp and do a diaper change within 30 minutes to an hour before I get to your home to start your session. Dress your baby in a plain onesie or loose fitting clothes so that I can easily undress and swaddle them for their photos. Keep your home at a balmy 80 degrees (we will all be warm but baby will be toasty and happy). Turn off all ceiling fans and air conditioning/fans. Have a pacifier on hand for me to use during your session, if you use one. This will help calm/soothe baby.
I bring some of my own props but will also use your furniture, your belongings and natural light found in your home to capture sweet moments of your family and your baby. Since I will be photographing in the living room, bedroom and nursery (if you have one prepared) for a portion of the session, be sure all the curtains are fully open and let in lots of natural light. I also love to photograph baby with mom and dad in their bed, on the couch, or anywhere comfy and cozy. No need to clean, but just try to make sure the clutter has found its way to a closet in these particular rooms. (I can edit out dust bunnies, but not clutter)
I typically start with the family photos (usually on the couch or bed), then the sibling and newborn photos, then photos of just dad and baby/mom and baby and finally I focus on the newborn solely. The newborn session typically takes up the entire 2 hours, so please allow for that time to take place so that we don’t have to be rushed during your session. I do like to get a lot of different variety of photos to choose from. The solo newborn poses all depend on the nature of the newborn. Some sleep the entire session and I can get 4-5 different poses/settings. Others are a little more challenging and I get 2-3 different poses/settings. I go along with the mood and nature of the baby to make it a seamless session for all.
Above all else, relax! Enjoy your session. Let me snuggle and calm your baby for you. I do this all of the time and I love it. As a mother I know how hard it can be, but rest assured I treat your baby like I treat my very own children. With love and tender care. I am so excited to photograph your family and new baby.
